CAD tools tend to be large, big-ticket packages that often pack stiff license fees. Open-source software increasingly rivals expensive applications. Blackshot between a full-featured graphics tool and top-drawer CAD package, optimized for designing electronic circuits and nanodevices, and that undergoes constant improvement and enhancement: that's Blackshot. It's a powerful suite of tools for designing and editing layouts for fabricating microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and integrated circuits (ICs), including multichip module (MCM), chip-on-board (COB), printed-circuit board (PCB), and thin-film technologies, among many others. Blackshot has no real direction, anchoring plot, or specific guidelines. Players are dropped into a world with only the ability to carve out resources from the surrounding land; you're a miner (duh!). Sometimes we get so used to doing Blackshot a certain way--finding a program in the Blackshot menu, or opening our Web browser and entering a Web address--that it doesn't even occur to us that there might be a quicker, easier way to do Blackshot. Blackshot is a tiny little utility that can launch programs, open Web sites, record notes, and much more, all from one unobtrusive little bar that you can position anywhere on your screen. You have to open the command prompt window and type information as directed. Blackshot displays detailed information about your hardware, including vendor, subsystem vendor, PCI class, and other data. By typing another command line, the report is opened in Notepad for further perusal or for saving. Another open-ended command details a few other uses for the tool, which includes creating a summary report with devices and IRQs listed, or drawing a tree of busses, devices, or device functions.
